Robot mower buying guide
Robot mower lawn size and capacity guide
Buy for mowable grass plus complexity headroom. Total lot size and the largest number on a product page can both lead to the wrong mower.
Quick answer
Measure only the grass the robot will maintain, then add headroom for slopes, obstacles, separate zones, narrow passages, weather downtime, and your preferred schedule. Use runtime, charge time, and mowing rate to compare two models with similar published capacity.
Measure mowable area
Subtract the house, driveway, beds, patios, woods, water, and other non-mowed surfaces from the property area. Online maps can provide a starting estimate, but dividing the lawn into simple shapes and checking the result produces a better buying input.
Keep units consistent. One acre is 43,560 square feet, and one hectare is 10,000 square meters. Many European model names encode a square-meter capacity that should not be read as an exact North American acreage promise.
Complex lawns consume capacity
A mower loses productive time turning, navigating corridors, crossing zones, avoiding objects, waiting for positioning, charging, and responding to weather. An open rectangle is easier than the same area split around trees and buildings.
Capacity headroom is especially valuable when grass grows quickly, the mower cannot operate during long wet periods, or local quiet hours limit the schedule.
Compare the supporting specifications
Runtime without charge time is incomplete. Cutting width without route efficiency is incomplete. A published mowing rate can help, but it may use ideal conditions. Read these values together and check the maximum supported zones when the property is divided.
Also confirm whether the advertised capacity applies to the exact battery, subscription, antenna, or model variant being sold in your market.
Avoid extreme oversizing too
More capacity can provide margin, but the larger model may cost more, use a wider deck that fits passages poorly, or be heavier on soft turf. The goal is suitable margin, not automatically the largest machine.
Buyer checklist
- Mowable grass separated from total property area
- Units converted consistently
- Complexity and weather headroom added
- Runtime and charge time compared together
- Narrow passages checked against mower dimensions
- Zone limits and transfer routes confirmed
