How to choose a robot lawn mower
Start with the parts of your property that can disqualify a mower, then compare conveniences and price. Capacity alone is never enough.

Map the property before comparing models
Robot mower marketing usually starts with maximum lawn area. Your first worksheet should start somewhere else: the actual mowable area, the number of disconnected zones, narrow passages, slopes, overhead tree cover, retaining walls, ponds, roads, and places where a robot could become trapped.
Separate hard constraints from preferences. A mower that cannot navigate under your trees or safely handle the steepest section is a poor fit even if its price, app, and listed capacity look ideal.
- Measure mowable grass rather than total lot size.
- Record the steepest sustained grade and any side slopes.
- Count separate zones and measure the narrowest connector.
- Mark drop-offs, water, public sidewalks, and traffic edges.
Pick the setup and navigation family
Boundary-wire systems use a physical perimeter signal. They require installation work, but the boundary can remain dependable in yards where satellite reception or visual mapping is difficult. Wire-free systems can use RTK satellite positioning, cameras, LiDAR, or a combination. They reduce buried-wire work but still have environmental limits.
Do not treat every wire-free mower as interchangeable. RTK performance depends on the mower and reference station seeing enough sky. Vision depends on usable visual boundaries and lighting. LiDAR can map geometry without satellite positioning, but range, occlusion, and changing vegetation still matter.
Use capacity as headroom, not a promise
Published capacity is a useful comparison field, not a guaranteed daily result. Complex shapes, slopes, wet-weather interruptions, narrow corridors, charging cycles, grass growth, and conservative schedules all reduce practical throughput.
A simple lawn may work near a mower's published limit. A complicated property should leave more margin. Compare runtime, charge time, mowing rate when available, and the manufacturer's assumptions instead of buying solely by acreage on the box.
Evaluate the ownership system
The mower is only part of the purchase. Check dealer or direct support, warranty coverage, blades, wheels, power supplies, antennas, boundary supplies, batteries, winter storage guidance, app requirements, and whether important functions depend on a subscription or cellular service.
Finally, confirm the exact regional variant and retailer listing. Similar model names can hide different cutting-height ranges, radios, included accessories, warranty terms, or availability by country.
